Love is Blue

If I had a chance to meet her, I'd probably fumble my words like an adolescent standing around the punch bowl with his dream girl. As embarrassing as that would be, eventually I'd build up all my courage, take a deep breath, walk tall and lay it on heavy. Make this woman understand her power and depth, her charisma and class; maybe even risk a smack and let her shapes know how I feel about them. Sophisticated lady, harpist of the cosmos, I love you always

Gotta love technology

Long before cell phones, i pods, digital cameras, DVD's, x box, modern medicine and the internet, many people suffering from depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and even alcoholism were treated inhumanely by means of bizarre, unheard of experiments. We all know of the dreaded electroshock therapy, the mind bending pills, the straight jackets and the mental institution horror stories, but none are more appalling, and notorious as the lobotomy.

Howard Dully was only twelve years old in 1960 when his brain was given a classic "ice pick" lobotomy by Dr. Walter Freeman, the most well known doctor associated with lobotomies in America at the time. Freeman's lobotomies were often unsuccessful, performed with dirty tools that literally included an icepick. Basically, the icepick would be shoved into the top of your eye sockets until it reached your brain, where a doctor, or psychopath (whichever you prefer) decides to scramble your brains around for about ten minutes in order to reprogram your personality!!!

"My Lobotomy," written by Dully and co authored by Charles Fleming (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0307381277/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0307381269&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=14E2RTVQECTFECGFCF6B) is an in depth, first hand account of Dully's life, and offers an uncensored glimpse at the lunacy, savagery and incomprehensible tragedy that was on the brink of becoming a widespread, medically accepted treatment for the mentally ill. It is important to know that this book is not for everyone. The things that led up to Dully's lobotomy, and the aftershocks that echo throughout his life since then are often tragically unfair and undeniably sobering. Not only did I walk away from this book shaking my head in disbelief with a bit more education about past treatment for the mentally ill, I also walked away extremely grateful and happy that I didn't grow up in an era where I had to worry about things like that. Today, adults and children alike suffer from hyper attention disorders, anxiety, depression and schizophrenia and are prescribed medications that very well may be controversial but are nowhere near as blatantly brutal as giving someone a lobotomy.... with an ice pick.....by some nutbag doctor that has a hard on for scrambling brains...

Happy Moonlight

Being that I haven't posted in a few days. I will start proper. First on the list- David Perian and Alberto Baldan. I really can't provide a history of who these guys are or when they released this album with the Chappell label, but I know its funky, psychedelic and not nearly as well known as it should be. You know what, I lied. I can give you a little bit of information... the album was called Happy and Crazy Music. I'd show you a picture of the cover but I already made a simple video for one the tracks off the album featuring artwork by cartoon guru Vaughn Bode (more about him later.)

Get angry about something!!

http://www.weny.com/News-Regional.asp?ARTICLE3890=9152308

Today's Inspiration isn't about the message itself but how it's delivered. Granted, this guy makes some good points about the wakness of the media and how they prefer to focus on nonsense rather than the war, when billions are spent and people die and blablabla ...that's cool and all but what inspires me is how this dude just goes all "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!!"

I'm still learning

The birds told me to wake up this morning. Laying in bed, doing some half-assed stretches, I thought about a mix I made many moons ago and remembered an ill cover of Birds In My Tree. I'm almost certain it's a Strawberry Alarm Clock cover, but The Buttons deliver an outstanding effort with this version.

In other news, since the musical half of this blog is rather short, I'd like to shine a little light on The Maxx. Created by Sam Kieth, The Maxx was a dope comic that was released back when Image Comics was still fairly new. It was abstract, unique, beautifully written and the artwork alone was worth the $1.95 an issue. The story is deep, bizarre, completely original, spiritual and intriguingly confusing. There's a lot more to be said about Sam Kieth, and the Maxx but tonight isn't going to be the night I do it.

Casiopea

Who cares... just have fun with it...

This morning is all about rediscovering the insanely slept on and equally talented Japanese jazz fusion band, Casiopea. I don't remember where I was or how I even heard of these guys, but apparently, I had stumbled across something good.

Listening to a live version of 'Swear' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmyZ8PpRdmg as I write this, I remember summertime drunkenness. Forties and subway rides into Manhattan for music and bar hopping with a friend (who shall remain nameless) which would always equal hilarity and in most cases insane foolishness. Shit, we made the New York Times for swimming in the fountain of Washington Square Park one night; drunk out of our minds, swimming in circles during a heatwave and heckling tourists to join us; I think I even called one girl a pussy for not jumping in. It's a miracle we didn't get arrested.

So yeah, Casiopea is dope. They have released over two dozen albums, maybe closer to three, which can make finding treats quite a mission. Personally, not every album is for me, and in reality there are only a handful of songs I listen to. Now go forth and find some Casipoean gold, it may be a hit and miss process, but the rewards can be huge.
